Barboursville Vineyards Weddings: A Timeless Virginia Wine Country Experience

There’s something magical about weddings at Barboursville Vineyards. As a wedding photographer who has been capturing celebrations here for over 20 years, I can tell you—this is a venue that never loses its charm. Whether it’s the way the evening light dances across the vines or the sense of history that lives in the Jefferson-designed ruins, Barboursville offers couples a truly unforgettable place to begin their marriage.

Set just northeast of Charlottesville, this estate has been part of Virginia’s wine landscape since 1976, making it one of the oldest and most respected vineyards in the region. Its rolling hills, romantic architecture, and award-winning wines make it a favorite not only among couples but also photographers like myself who love capturing its timeless beauty.

What Makes Barboursville Vineyards So Special?

Barboursville is more than just a vineyard—it’s a historic destination that blends elegance, nature, and a deep-rooted Virginia history. At the heart of the property lie the preserved ruins of a mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson for Governor James Barbour. This backdrop is unlike anything else in the area and adds a regal, almost European character to your wedding day.

Beyond the ruins, the estate unfolds into vine-covered hills, Italian-style gardens, and peaceful country roads that transport you into a world of rustic luxury. As someone who has explored this property extensively, I can tell you that there’s no shortage of breathtaking views or inspiring locations for wedding portraits.

My Favorite Photo Locations at Barboursville

Every wedding at Barboursville offers fresh inspiration, but I definitely have a few favorite spots when it comes to capturing those unforgettable moments:

  • The Winding Drive Up to the Vineyard
One of the first things guests experience is also one of my favorite photo spots. This charming country road leading up to the winery gives off a postcard worthy vibe with its perfect S curve design that is any photographer’s dream. It's the perfect setting for romantic, golden-hour portraits—especially with a vintage car or a flowing veil catching the breeze.
  • The Tasting Room Overlook with Vineyard Views
At the top of the hill by the tasting room, there's a spectacular view of the vineyard and mountains. It’s one of the best places on the property to capture the expansive beauty of the vineyards especially at sunset.
  • The Back Vineyard
When available, the more secluded vineyard areas on the back side of the property are stunning. I love photographing couples set against the rows of vines with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. It’s peaceful, intimate, and perfect for drone, and wide landscape shots that truly showcase the setting.
  • The Historic Ruins
Of course, the iconic ruins are a must. Whether lit up for an evening ceremony or framed against the sky for a dramatic first look, they bring a sense of grandeur and heritage to any wedding pictures.

Seasonal Wedding Inspiration

One of the best things about Barboursville is how beautifully it transforms with the seasons:

  • Spring – Fresh greenery, blooming flowers, and mild temperatures make this a fantastic time for outdoor ceremonies and colorful portraits.
  • Summer – Lush vineyards and golden light create vibrant imagery, especially during sunset celebrations.
  • Fall – The foliage turns to deep reds and oranges, wrapping the entire estate in warmth. It's one of the most popular (and photogenic!) times to get married here.
  • Winter – Barboursville has a quiet charm in the colder months. Indoors, the glow of candlelight at Library 1821 or Palladio Restaurant creates a cozy, romantic setting perfect for micro weddings or intimate gatherings.

Wedding Venue Options at Barboursville

Barboursville offers a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, so you can customize your wedding day to suit your style and guest list. A few standout options include:

  • The Ruins – Ideal for an open-air ceremony filled with character and history.
  • Piedmont Arcades – The covered veranda with sweeping vineyard and mountain views, accommodating up to 120 seated guests.
  • The Racetrack – A spacious lawn perfect for tented receptions and larger events (up to 500 guests).
  • Library 1821 – A warm, intimate space for cozy receptions or winter weddings.
  • Palladio Restaurant – A fine-dining experience for food and wine lovers seeking an elevated, multi-course reception. A great option for Rehearsal Dinners.
  • Garden Terrace & Vineyard Lawn – Quiet, scenic areas ideal for ceremonies surrounded by lavender, vines, and open sky.

Whether you're planning a grand affair or something more intimate, there’s a space here that will feel just right.

Elopements and Intimate Weddings

While Barboursville is well-suited for larger weddings, it’s also a wonderful choice for elopements and micro weddings. I’ve photographed couples exchanging vows amongst the Barboursville Ruins in an intimate setting, celebrating an elopement while enjoying the wine in Library 1821, and sharing a beautiful moment amongst the vines after tying the knot. The estate’s flexibility and atmosphere lend themselves beautifully to small-scale, meaningful celebrations.

Pro Tip: Contact Barboursville’s events team directly for the most up-to-date availability and options for elopements or weekday weddings.

The Wine and Culinary Experience

You can’t talk about Barboursville without mentioning the wine. Their Octagon—a Bordeaux-style red blend—is their flagship bottle, and it's a perfect choice for wedding toasts and wine pairings. Their Viognier is another favorite among couples and guests alike, especially in warmer months.

If you’re incorporating food and wine into your wedding experience, Palladio Restaurant on the property offers an exceptional fine dining experience. With a menu inspired by local, seasonal ingredients and paired with estate wines, it’s a standout option for rehearsal dinners or small receptions.

On-Site Accommodations

For couples and guests who want to extend their stay, the 1804 Inn and Vineyard Cottages offer elegant accommodations with vineyard views and easy access to the festivities. Staying on-site makes the entire experience feel like a destination wedding.
