Best Locations for High School Senior Portraits

Celebrating a High School Milestone

High school senior portraits serve as a way to encapsulate this time. They deserve to feel personal and intentional. Over the years, I’ve photographed seniors all across Charlottesville and Central Virginia, and one of the most important parts of creating great senior pictures is choosing the perfect location!

How to Choose the Right Senior Portrait Location

Location plays a huge role in how senior portraits feel. The best senior picture locations are not just beautiful, they feel like you.

I always encourage seniors and families to think about places that match personality and style. Some seniors love wide-open landscapes and dramatic views. Others feel more at home in colorful, creative spaces or classic Charlottesville settings.

Ravens Roost

Ravens Roost is one of the most popular senior portrait locations in Central Virginia, and it’s easy to see why. The expansive mountain views create a dramatic, adventurous feel that looks incredible in photos.

This location is a great fit for outdoorsy seniors or anyone who wants statement portraits with a big visual impact.

Sunset sessions here provide some of the most dramatic backdrops for amazing senior portraits!

Hazy Mountain Vineyards

Hazy Mountain Vineyards offers a modern mountain aesthetic with Tuscan countryside inspired architecture and sweeping panoramic views. This location works especially well for seniors looking for amazing mountain views without the trek to the Blue Ridge Parkway. With vineyards and expansive mountain scenery all in one place it is truly one of my top choices!

Chiles Peach Orchard

Chiles Peach Orchard offers a relaxed and approachable setting that works beautifully for senior pictures. It’s lovely year round, from spring blossoms to summer sunflowers and rich fall color, with a peach tree canopy that provides welcome shade during the afternoon sun.

This location feels natural and easy, making it a great option for seniors who want an outdoor setting where their personality can really shine. Sessions here always feel light, fun, and full of energy.

IX Art Park

For seniors who love bold color, creativity, and a modern vibe, IX Art Park is a fantastic choice. The murals, sculptures, and open spaces create a unique backdrop that stands out from more traditional locations.

This spot is ideal for artistic seniors who want urban, modern portraits that feel expressive and fun.

UVA Lawn & Gardens

This location is especially popular for seniors, whether or not you’re planning to attend UVA. For those who are, we can include iconic landmarks like the Rotunda and the Lawn for portraits that feel timeless and unmistakably Charlottesville.

For seniors who love the beauty of UVA but don’t want their portraits to feel tied to their next chapter, we can focus on the classical architecture, from columns and walkways to the reflecting fountain. We can also venture into the UVA gardens, which offer a softer, quieter setting with seasonal greenery and blooms. Together, these areas create a beautiful balance of structure and natural elements.

Horse Farms & Open Fields

For seniors with an equestrian background, horse farms are always one of my favorite places to photograph. The connection between a rider and their horse is such a big part of who they are, and bringing that into a senior session makes the portraits incredibly personal. Photographing at your own barn and in the surrounding open fields allows us to include your horse, while also creating portraits of you on your own, right in the place you feel most at home.

King Family Vineyards

King Family Vineyards is a location I come back to often because it gives us so much variety without ever feeling rushed. Between the mountain views, open fields, classic fencing, and vineyard rows, we can create a diverse senior portrait gallery all in one place. It’s perfect for seniors who want that unmistakable Charlottesville countryside feel I know so many families love.

Carter Mountain Orchard

Carter Mountain Orchard is an iconic Charlottesville location and a favorite for fall senior portraits. Late October through early November is one of my favorite times to photograph here, when the sunset light is at its best and the colors are rich, vibrant, and at their peak. Sessions here feel energetic and celebratory, especially for seniors who love a classic Charlottesville backdrop with a seasonal feel.

Best Time of Year for Senior Portraits

Senior portrait season typically begins toward the end of junior year, and choosing the right timing can make a big difference in both availability and overall experience.

Summer is one of the most popular times for senior portraits. Schedules tend to be more flexible once school is out, and seniors often have the time and energy to really enjoy the session without the pressure of classes, sports, or activities. The relaxed pace of summer makes it an easy and enjoyable option for many families.

Late summer and early fall, especially August and September, are also in high demand. These months offer beautiful light and comfortable temperatures, but they do tend to book quickly as seniors plan ahead for yearbook submissions. If fall is your goal, booking early is especially important.

Late fall remains an option for senior portraits as well, though families should be mindful of yearbook deadlines, which often fall earlier in the season. Spring sessions work best for seniors who are not concerned with the yearbook and are instead focused on having images for graduation announcements, gifts, and celebrating the end of senior year.

No matter the season, I’m happy to help families choose a time that fits their schedule and priorities, and ensures senior portraits feel relaxed, meaningful, and well planned.

Frequently Asked Questions About Senior Portraits

When should I book my senior portrait session?

I recommend booking your session a few months in advance to give time for session planning and have the best selection of dates. Prime seasons fill quickly, especially summer and early fall.  Keep yearbook deadlines in mind when booking your session.

How long do senior portrait sessions take?

Most senior portrait sessions last about one hour. Longer sessions can make sense when including a sibling, horse or pet.

Can we update our family portraits too?

Yes. Families can choose a combination session, often one hour focused on senior portraits followed by a second hour for family photos, or scheduled as a separate family session (great if wanting to include older siblings coming back from college).

Making Senior Portraits Meaningful

Senior year goes by quickly, and this season deserves to be documented with intention. If you’re beginning to plan high school senior portraits in Charlottesville or Central Virginia, I’d love to help you create something personal and timeless. Reach out early to reserve your date and start planning a session that truly reflects who your senior is right now.
