A Complete Guide to Summer Family Portraits

Summer is one of the most popular times of year for family portraits in Charlottesville, and for good reason. The kids are out of school, schedules are often a little more flexible, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, vineyards, orchards, and wildflower fields are bursting with color. Whether you're looking to update the family portrait hanging over your fireplace or create new artwork for your home, summer provides some beautiful opportunities for family photography.

That said, summer portrait sessions come with a few unique considerations. From choosing the right time of day and selecting outfits that can handle the Virginia heat to finding the perfect location and planning around summer weather, a little preparation can go a long way toward creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

As a Charlottesville family photographer for more than 20 years, I've photographed families in nearly every type of summer condition imaginable. In this guide, I'll walk you through everything you need to know about planning successful summer family portraits, including the best locations, what to wear, when to schedule your session, and how to make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

What Is the Best Time of Day for Summer Family Portraits?

One of the most common questions we receive is, "What is the best time of day for summer family photos?"

While many photographers prefer sunset sessions, my most recommended time slots for summer family portraits in Charlottesville are actually in the early morning hours. Morning sessions offer cooler temperatures and lower humidity, a lower chance of afternoon thunderstorms, less crowded locations, and soft, flattering lighting. This also tends to be the best time of day for photographing younger children, as they tend to be more energetic and cooperative.

Charlottesville summers can be hot and humid, especially in July and August. Starting early allows your family to stay comfortable while creating natural, relaxed portraits. The softer morning light is also incredibly flattering and helps create the bright, timeless look many families love.

If mornings are not an option for your family, sunset sessions can also be beautiful. We simply recommend planning around the heat and allowing extra flexibility for weather.

What Should You Wear for Summer Family Portraits?

We all know how hot Charlottesville summers can be. When planning family portraits, you want outfits that look great while helping everyone stay comfortable.

Lightweight, breathable fabrics are always our top recommendation. Linen, cotton, and other natural fabrics photograph beautifully while helping you stay cool during your session.

For moms, flowing sundresses continue to be one of the most popular choices. Dresses add movement and elegance to photographs while remaining comfortable in warm weather. We recommend selecting dresses with subtle patterns or solid colors rather than busy prints.

For dads, lightweight button-down shirts are a classic choice and can easily be dressed up or down. On especially hot days, a breathable polo shirt can provide a polished look while offering a little more comfort.

For younger girls, dresses with ruffles, fun sleeves, or simple patterns create a timeless and playful look. Older daughters often prefer more refined styles such as simpler dresses and skirts, or lightweight pants paired with simple tops.

For boys, short-sleeve button-down shirts paired with khaki shorts or pants remain a favorite option that photographs well and keeps them comfortable.

Best Locations for Summer Family Portraits in Charlottesville

Raven's Roost

Although beautiful throughout the year, summer is when Raven's Roost truly shines. The mountains are framed by lush green forests, creating one of the most scenic views in Central Virginia.

One of the biggest advantages of Raven's Roost is the elevation. Temperatures are often 10 to 15 degrees cooler than in Charlottesville, making it one of our favorite locations for summer family portraits.

Hazy Mountain Vineyard & Brewery

If you love mountain views but prefer a location closer to Charlottesville, Hazy Mountain is an excellent choice.

The property offers sweeping Blue Ridge Mountain views, vineyards, open fields, and a pond, creating tremendous variety within a single portrait session. It is one of our favorite locations for families who want a mountain backdrop without a long drive.

Chiswell - Sunflower Fest

For many Charlottesville-area families, Chiswell Farm is emerging as the reigning champion of sunflower season.

Located just outside Charlottesville, Chiswell hosts an annual Sunflower Fest (hosted from July 9-August 2nd of this year) that attracts visitors from throughout Virginia. The farm features hundreds of blooming sunflowers set against beautiful mountain views, creating a spectacular backdrop for family portraits. In addition to the sunflower fields, the property includes picturesque vineyard views and rolling countryside.

Chiles Peach Orchard

Few locations feel more like summer than Chiles Peach Orchard.

Wildflower fields, sunflower blooms, peach trees, and mountain views provide endless opportunities for beautiful family portraits. The property is also a favorite among children, helping create natural smiles and genuine interactions.

Sunflowers typically peak between late July and early August, making this one of the most sought-after portrait locations during that time of year.

Charlottesville Area Vineyards

Charlottesville is home to some of Virginia's most beautiful vineyards. During the summer months, the vines are full and vibrant, creating a lush green backdrop that photographs beautifully.

Early morning sessions are often ideal at vineyard locations because temperatures are cooler and the grounds tend to be quieter.

Important Things to Consider for Summer Family Photos

The Heat and Humidity

Summer weather in Charlottesville can be challenging, especially for young children.

Whenever possible, we recommend scheduling sessions early in the morning when temperatures are cooler and everyone is more comfortable.

Summer Lighting

The longer days of summer mean the sun remains high in the sky for much of the day.

If you are planning an evening session, we recommend scheduling your portraits during the final one to two hours before sunset. This creates softer, more flattering light and helps avoid harsh shadows.

Sunflower Season

Sunflower fields are one of the most requested summer portrait locations.

In Charlottesville, peak sunflower season generally occurs from late July through early August. If sunflowers are important to you, it is best to reserve your session well in advance.

Summer Weather

Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are common throughout the summer.

Fortunately, we always build flexibility into our schedule and maintain backup dates when necessary. Morning sessions typically reduce the likelihood of weather-related interruptions.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Summer Family Portraits?

Summer family portrait sessions tend to fill quickly, especially around sunflower season and before school starts in August.

We recommend reaching out at least one to two months in advance to secure your preferred date and location.

Planning ahead gives us plenty of time to discuss wardrobe options, choose the perfect location, and create a portrait experience that feels relaxed and enjoyable for your family.
