A Castle Wedding Venue in Virginia

Did you grow up dreaming about a fairytale wedding, or even just getting married in a castle? Dover Hall offers all of the elegance and magic of this kind of ceremony.

Located in Manakin-Sabot in Goochland County just outside of Richmond, Dover Hall is one of the most unique wedding venues in the state. The property feels like something you would expect to find tucked away in the English countryside rather than central Virginia. With its English Tudor style exterior, stone architecture, grand interiors, and manicured gardens, the venue immediately creates a sense of stepping into a old romantic estate with European flair.

The estate itself is impressive in scale. The house contains about 30 rooms, a ballroom, and 17 different fireplaces. It spans over 38,000 square feet and sits on 55 private acres of countryside. From the moment you drive up the winding entrance road, the property feels secluded, elegant, and timeless.

Many couples are drawn to Dover Hall because it feels like a regal wedding venue. The architecture and design take inspiration from European estates and castles, giving the entire property a fairytale atmosphere. If you love historic architecture, dramatic interiors, and classic elegance, it is easy to see why Dover Hall has become one of the most sought after luxury Virginia wedding venues.

As a photographer, I always appreciate venues that offer visual variety, natural lighting, and strong architectural character. Dover Hall has all of this in abundance. Every room, hallway, and garden corner feels intentionally designed, which creates incredible opportunities for wedding portraits throughout the day.

For couples searching for a castle wedding venue in Virginia or a luxury Richmond Virginia wedding venue, Dover Hall offers something truly special.

Where Is Dover Hall Located?

Dover Hall is located in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia in Goochland County. The property sits in a quiet countryside setting surrounded by rolling landscape and farmland, which gives the venue a peaceful and private feel.

Even though it feels tucked away, it is still very accessible for guests traveling from different areas.

Dover Hall is located:

  • About 20 to 25 minutes west of Richmond
  • Roughly 45 minutes from Charlottesville
  • About two hours south of Washington, D.C.

Because of its central location between Richmond and Charlottesville, Dover Hall works beautifully for destination style weddings in Virginia. If Dover Hall is a destination wedding for you, the proximity to Richmond International Airport makes it easy for everyone to arrive.

Timeless European Elegance with Vintage Charm

One of the things that makes Dover Hall so memorable is the architecture. The estate draws inspiration from English Tudor design, creating the feeling of an Old English countryside castle right here in Virginia. Throughout the property you will see influences from English, French, Italian, and Scottish estates, giving the venue a timeless European atmosphere.

Inside the 38,000 square foot estate, the interiors are just as impressive as the exterior. The house is filled with period art and antiques, and while the overall look leans English Tudor, you will also notice Elizabethan, Gothic, Victorian, and Jacobean influences throughout the rooms. Ornate wallpaper, glittering chandeliers, spiral staircases, and gothic arched windows and doorways give the estate a moody, romantic atmosphere. Each room features its own unique color palette and distinct personality, so moving through the house feels almost like stepping into a new chapter of history, with every space offering a different story and sense of character. The overall aesthetic throughout the property remains constant, though: dreamy, dramatic, vintage-inspired, and timeless.

Even though the architecture feels grand and dramatic, the estate still manages to feel warm and comfortable. From a photography perspective, the natural light coming through the arched windows combined with the rich textures and historic details creates beautiful portrait opportunities throughout the entire property.

If you grew up dreaming of feeling like royalty on your wedding day, this is the venue that can turn that dream into a reality.

With all of these elements, it is easy to see why Dover Hall has gained national recognition as a premier wedding destination. The venue was named Best in North America for Weddings, Parties, and Celebrations by Condé Nast Johansens in both 2025 and 2026.

A Beautiful Venue in Every Season

One of the things I love about Dover Hall is that it works beautifully in every season.

During spring, summer, and early fall, the gardens are in bloom and outdoor ceremonies near the reflecting pool or terrace are especially stunning.

In late fall and winter, the fireplaces, chandeliers, and candlelit hallways create a warm and romantic atmosphere inside the estate.

Even rainy days can magical here. The stone architecture and moody interiors often look even more dramatic.

Getting Ready at Dover Hall

One of the things I appreciate about Dover Hall is that the getting ready spaces feel just as thoughtfully designed as the rest of the estate. Having comfortable and spacious preparation areas helps the day start in a relaxed way for everyone involved.

The Queen Elizabeth Suite is where the bride and bridesmaids typically get ready.

The room is elegant and spacious, with beautiful natural light that pours in through the windows. The soft glow of the morning light in this space makes it especially lovely for getting ready photos and quiet moments before the ceremony.

The groom and groomsmen typically gather in the Billiard’s Room.

The space has a classic trophy room atmosphere with over 30 different taxidermy mounts lining the walls, and an elk horn chandelier. There is also a pool table and television, which creates a relaxed environment for the guys while they get ready for the day.

Having these separate preparation spaces allows both sides of the wedding party to enjoy the morning without feeling rushed or crowded.

Ideal Indoor Portrait Locations

From a photography perspective, Dover Hall offers some incredible indoor portrait locations.

The Two Story Library

The vintage inspired two story library is one of the most visually striking rooms in the estate. Intricate carved wooden details surround the room and create a dramatic architectural presence.

The Parlor

The Parlor features Renaissance Revival style architecture with marble accents and a crystal chandelier. The space has a clean and refined look that photographs beautifully.

The Formal Dining Room

The formal dining room is another favorite portrait location. The room includes a hand carved 24 foot table, green walls, marble busts, and 1830s French chandeliers. The Italian barrel vaulted ceilings add even more character to the space.

The Wine Cellar

The wine cellar features stone walls and bluestone flooring that reflect the estate’s medieval architectural influences, creating a space that feels reminiscent of an old European castle. The heavy textures, arched stonework, and cool natural materials give the room a rich, historic atmosphere. From here, a doorway leads directly out to a hidden garden, adding an unexpected sense of discovery and charm to this intimate space.

An honorable mention goes to the bathrooms, which are incredibly detailed, in their own right. Each one has its own unique design and personality.

Dover Hall's Grand Ballroom, wrought iron chandeliers, lion sculptures, sandstone fireplace, indoor and outdoor wedding space

The Grand Ballroom

For couples planning an indoor ceremony or reception, the Grand Ballroom is the centerpiece of the estate.

The room features soaring ceilings, wrought iron chandeliers, and a large sandstone fireplace that anchors the space. The scale of the room feels grand, yet still warm and inviting.

The sandstone fireplace mantel serves as the striking centerpiece of the ballroom, flanked by two life-sized lion sculptures on either side. These lions were sourced directly from an estate in Scotland, adding an authentic touch of vintage European charm to the space. The mantel also creates a beautiful focal point for wedding décor, making it the perfect place to incorporate additional floral arrangements or seasonal details on your wedding day.

Another stunning feature of the ballroom is the wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that lead directly to the Bluestone Terrace. When the doors are open, the space transitions seamlessly between indoors and outdoors.

This allows couples to create a celebration that flows naturally between an indoor and outdoor setting.

The Glass Hall

Just steps away from the ballroom is the Glass Hall, another reception space that works especially well for dancing and larger celebrations.

The Glass Hall is often used later in the evening once the formal reception transitions into a dance party. The space works beautifully for weddings with 200 or more guests and gives couples flexibility when planning the flow of their evening.

Having multiple reception areas like this allows the event to evolve naturally throughout the night.

Outdoor Ceremony Locations

One of the advantages of Dover Hall is the variety of beautiful outdoor ceremony locations available across the property. Some of the most popular settings include the Reflecting Pool, the elegant Bluestone Terrace, the lush Two-Tiered Gardens, the charming Rose Garden, and the intimate Cobblestone Courtyard. Each of these areas offers its own distinct atmosphere, allowing couples to choose the setting that best reflects the style and feel of their wedding day. Couples are also welcome to select another ceremony location somewhere else on the grounds. With 55 acres of gardens, terraces, and scenic countryside views, Dover Hall provides endless possibilities for creating a ceremony space that feels truly unique.

Garden Party Style Receptions

For couples who love outdoor entertaining, Dover Hall is an incredible setting for garden party–style receptions. The Bluestone Terrace sits beside the estate’s beautiful stone-walled gardens, including the Two-Tiered Garden and the Rose Garden, creating a setting that feels straight out of a European estate. Classical columns and wrought iron seating further enhance the romantic garden atmosphere. This space works beautifully for outdoor cocktail hours, garden-inspired receptions, and candlelit evening celebrations. As the sun begins to set, the terrace and surrounding gardens take on an especially magical glow, making it one of the most romantic places on the property to celebrate with family and friends.

A Renowned Culinary Experience

One of the hallmarks of Dover Hall is its in house culinary program.

The venue has its own culinary team that focuses on farm-to-table menus, using ingredients sourced from local farmers. This commitment to fresh, locally sourced food is a defining part of the Dover Hall experience.

Chef Leah Randolph leads the culinary program and was named Chef of the Year in 2023 by the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, and Travel Association.

Couples work closely with the culinary team to create custom menus for their wedding, allowing the dining experience to feel personal and elevated.

Dover Hall also has a sister property called 7 Lady Vineyards.

This partnership allows the venue to provide wine directly from their own vineyard, which enhances the overall dining experience and keeps the celebration connected to the local Virginia wine region.
