Orso Blu Farm: Everything You Need to Know About Taking Pictures in a Lavender Field

Every year, we're always on the lookout for unique locations that give our clients something a little different from the traditional parks, vineyards, and mountain overlooks. While those locations will always have their place, it's exciting to discover somewhere that feels completely fresh.

After photographing our first senior session at Orso Blu Farm, we knew this was a location we wanted to offer more often.

Tucked away in Crozet with the Blue Ridge Mountains as its backdrop, Orso Blu Farm offers beautiful rows of blooming lavender that create a portrait setting unlike anywhere else in Central Virginia.

Why We Love Orso Blu Farm

One of the first things you'll notice when you arrive is how peaceful everything feels. Lavender has long been associated with relaxation and calm. For centuries it has been used in homeopathic traditions to encourage better sleep and reduce stress. Whether or not you're there for its wellness benefits, there's something about standing in the middle of thousands of fragrant lavender plants that instantly helps you slow down and enjoy the moment.

That relaxed atmosphere naturally translates into your portraits. Instead of feeling rushed or self-conscious, most people settle in quickly, making their smiles and interactions feel more genuine. For those who may be nervous about being in front of the camera, that calming environment can make a surprising difference.

A Portrait Location Unlike Any Other

The lavender fields create a look that is completely different from anything else we photograph throughout the year.

The long rows of lavender add incredible depth to images, naturally drawing your eye toward the subject while creating beautiful leading lines throughout each photograph. The soft purple blooms add subtle color without overwhelming the portraits, resulting in images that feel light and whimsical.

Because the fields are surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, early morning sessions are especially beautiful. As the sun rises over the mountains, the golden hour light spills across the lavender fields, creating soft and flattering lighting for your session.

Perfect for Senior Pictures

Our first experience at Orso Blu Farm was during a senior portrait session, and it quickly became one of our favorite senior locations.

If lavender has always been one of your favorite flowers or scents, incorporating it into your senior portraits is also a wonderful way to make your session feel even more personal. After all, lavender has become one of the world's most popular essential oils, is found in countless fragrances, and has even become a favorite flavor in desserts and specialty drinks. If it's something you love, or if you’re just a big fan of the color purple, why use this location for your senior pictures?

A Beautiful Setting for Family Portraits

The lavender fields at Orso Blu Farm also work beautifully with family portraits. The rows of lavender naturally create depth while giving children room to explore and interact. Parents can walk hand in hand through the fields, children can play between the rows, and the mountain backdrop provides a beautiful sense of place that feels unmistakably Virginia.

Because the blooms only last for a short time each year, family portraits here also become something truly unique that won't look like everyone else's photos.

A Romantic Choice for Engagement Sessions

If you're looking for something different for your engagement pictures, Orso Blu Farm is hard to beat.

The combination of fragrant lavender fields, mountain views, and peaceful surroundings creates an incredibly romantic atmosphere. Couples can stroll through the rows together while the soft purple blooms surround them, resulting in images that feel both elegant and natural.

One feature that makes this location even more special is the opportunity to stay overnight on the property. Imagine spending a relaxing evening surrounded by the mountains after your engagement session. It turns an already memorable experience into a little getaway together.

Make a Day of Your Visit

One of our favorite things about Orso Blu Farm is that your portrait session doesn't have to be the only reason you visit.

During the main bloom in June, you can pick your own lavender bouquet before or after your session for a small additional fee. It's a fun keepsake to take home and a great way to remember your visit.

The farm also features a gift shop filled with handcrafted lavender products. Whether you're looking for lavender essential oil, magnesium spray, local lavender honey, or dried lavender sachets, it's easy to leave with something that lets you enjoy the experience long after your portraits are finished.

When Is the Best Time for Lavender Portraits?

The main lavender bloom takes place in June, and this is by far the best time to schedule your portrait session.

The fields are full, vibrant, and provide the dramatic rows of lavender that make this location so special.

There is typically a second bloom in October, but it is much smaller and considerably more limited. While it is still possible to create beautiful images during the fall bloom, there is simply less lavender to work with. If your heart is set on portraits surrounded by full lavender fields, we strongly recommend planning your session during the June bloom.

One of the things we love most about portrait photography is helping every session feel unique and true to you. Orso Blu Farm offers a location that feels peaceful, elegant, and unlike anywhere else around Charlottesville.

Whether you're celebrating your senior year, documenting your family, or celebrating your engagement, the lavender fields provide a beautiful backdrop that is only available for a few short weeks each year.
