Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville, Virginia is truly a photographer’s dream. From orchards and vineyards to historic architecture and sweeping mountain views, there are so many incredible options that choosing the perfect setting for your Charlottesville engagement photos might feel overwhelming.
As a Charlottesville engagement photographer, I’ve photographed couples all across Central Virginia and beyond. Below are some of my favorite engagement session locations in Charlottesville, along with a few bonus destinations in Richmond and Washington D.C. I hope this guide makes planning your engagement session feel simple and exciting.

Ravens Roost Overlook
One of my favorite locations for engagement sessions near Charlottesville is Ravens Roost Overlook, which is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mountain views are dramatic, especially at sunset or golden hour.
The best part is that it’s easily accessible. There is no hike required to reach the overlook, which makes it perfect for couples who want epic mountain views without a long trek. It is a great location for engagement sessions year-round (weather permitting), and is an especially nice option during the summer, as the temperature sits around 10 degrees below the rest of the Charlottesville/Albemarle area! This makes it an especially comfortable option during the warmer months.
If you are dreaming of Blue Ridge mountain engagement photos, this location never disappoints.

Hazy Mountain Vineyards and Brewery
Hazy Mountain Vineyards and Brewery feels like a little taste of Italy just outside Charlottesville.
The Tuscan style architecture, rolling hills, and panoramic mountain views create a destination feel without having to leave Central Virginia. It also doubles as one of my favorite alternatives to Ravens Roost if you still want those mountain views, but with beautiful architecture and vineyard charm.

Chiles Peach Orchard
A true local favorite, Chiles Peach Orchard is a beautiful choice for engagement photos in Charlottesville. From mid March or early April through late November, this location offers something special in every season.
In the spring, the blooming orchards create a soft, romantic backdrop. In the summer, the fields of zinnias and sunflowers add vibrant color and movement. In the fall, you can bring your four legged companion and pose among crisp air and golden foliage.
Chiles Family Orchards also includes Carter Mountain Orchard and Spring Valley Orchard, giving us multiple scenic options under the same family of properties.

Carter Mountain Orchard
Carter Mountain Orchard is a Charlottesville classic. If you are planning a fall engagement session in late October or early November, this is your spot.
Rolling hills, apple trees, and vibrant fall foliage create a quintessential Central Virginia backdrop. I always recommend scheduling during golden hour. The warm light enhances the color of the leaves and adds incredible depth and energy to your portraits.
For couples looking for fall engagement photos in Charlottesville, Carter Mountain is hard to beat.

The Lawn at UVA
You cannot create a list of the top engagement session locations in Charlottesville without including University of Virginia.
The Lawn is especially meaningful for couples who met during their time at UVA. It allows them to celebrate their engagement in the place where their story began.
That said, you do not have to be alumni to love this location. UVA offers incredible variety. The Rotunda, columns, and brick walkways provide symmetry and classic architecture. The gardens and Lawn offer a softer, more secluded feel. I love how versatile this location is!

King Family Vineyards
King Family Vineyards is not only one of my favorite wedding venues, it is also a stunning location for engagement photos.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the vineyards positively glow during sunset. You can stroll between rows of vines, share a quiet moment by the white picket fence, or create elegant portraits near the barn.
For couples wanting a vineyard engagement session with a more quiet, country feel and mountain views, this is the perfect choice.

Market at Grelen
Located in Orange County, The Market at Grelen is a Virginia treasure.
This property offers evergreen rows that are perfect in December, mountain views, orchards, gardens, and even charming spots near the gift shop. Our couples love to get lost in the beauty of the nature surrounding them, which makes for great pictures! It is one of my favorite hidden gems for Charlottesville engagement photography.

Barboursville Vineyards
A scenic country drive leads you to our next spot, Barboursville Vineyards. The Landmark Ruins, designed by Thomas Jefferson, create a dramatic and historic backdrop.
Surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside, this location feels both romantic and timeless. It exists as one of Virginia’s first wineries, and the mansion, which now exists as ruins, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. If you love history and Italian inspired architecture, this is an incredible option for engagement photos near Charlottesville.

Keswick Vineyards
Keswick Vineyards is another favorite wedding venue that doubles as a beautiful engagement session location. Like many of our popular locations, it comes with beautiful views of the Blue Ridge mountains and row after row of winding vines. There is a long, tree-lined driveway with white picket fences brings you onto the property, and creates gorgeous framing for photos.
Keswick Vineyards is also home to Edgewood Estate, which brings old southern charm and corinthian columns. In front of the estate sits the reason many couples choose this location over others: a stunning four-tiered white marble fountain. This fountain has provided a beautiful backdrop for many couples over the years, and will likely remain a favorite for years to come.
Keswick Vineyards is also dog friendly, which makes it perfect if you want to include your four legged friend in your engagement photos.

Keswick Hall
When it comes to a luxury Charlottesville proposal location, Keswick Hall is one of the most elevated, yet romantic options in the area.
The manicured gardens, sweeping mountain views, and European inspired architecture create the perfect setting for a surprise proposal. I often work closely with clients to discreetly plan the timing and positioning so everything feels natural and seamless.
After the proposal, we can explore the grounds for portraits near the fountains, terraces, and grand architecture. Overnight stays*

Albemarle Estate and Trump Winery
Our next location is actually a two-for-one deal: Albemarle Estate and Trump Winery. As Virginia’s largest vineyard, Trump Winery offers a breathtaking setting for engagement portraits. With expansive vineyards, mountain views, and even a charming chapel, there is incredible variety in one location.
Adjacent to the winery is Albemarle Estate at Trump Winery, a luxurious estate with manicured European style gardens and grand architecture. If you are looking for an elevated, estate style engagement session in Charlottesville, this combination is hard to top.
Albemarle Estate requires couples to book an overnight stay if they are planning their engagement session there.
Bonus Locations Beyond Charlottesville

Maymont - Richmond, Virginia
If you are closer to Richmond, Maymont is an absolutely gorgeous choice.
The property spans about 100 acres and includes a Victorian mansion, formal Italian gardens with statues and column lined walkways, and whimsical Japanese gardens with waterfalls and arched bridges. There are also specialty gardens like the Butterfly Garden and the Grotto. If you want your engagement session to be photographed in a garden setting, chances are, there’s a section of Maymont that will fit you. It is a truly beautiful space, with lots of location variety, just make sure to bring a change of shoes to swap into for the walk over.

National Mall - D.C.
If you are dreaming of engagement photos in Washington D.C., the National Mall is iconic.
The Mall stretches from the United States Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, with the Washington Monument rising at its center. Sunrise sessions are especially beautiful here. The early morning light is soft, the crowds are minimal, and the city feels calm.
The tree lined paths, reflecting pool, and classic marble architecture create timeless, elegant engagement portraits. For couples who love history, architecture, and that classic D.C. feel, the National Mall is unforgettable.

Various Monuments - D.C.
Beyond the Mall, Washington D.C. is filled with incredible monuments and memorials that each offer a distinct atmosphere.
The Jefferson Memorial offers a romantic waterfront setting with views of the Tidal Basin, especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial provides textured stone backdrops, cascading water features, and quiet garden pathways. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial creates a powerful and modern architectural setting.
Each monument brings its own personality, allowing us to tailor your Washington D.C. engagement session to fit your style.

Your Personal Favorite Hidden Gems
Some of my favorite engagement sessions take place at locations that are deeply personal to you. A private farm, the restaurant where you first met, your family property, or even your own backyard.
I love discovering new places through my couples! These sessions are always meaningful, relaxed, and uniquely yours.
The location is one of the most important parts of creating beautiful engagement photos. Whether you envision mountain views, vineyards, historic architecture, or iconic city landmarks, there is no shortage of incredible engagement session locations in Charlottesville and beyond.
If you are ready to start planning your Charlottesville engagement session, I would love to help you choose the perfect spot.
